Words: Rueben Riegler
To start off, we are Medium. We’re a crew of Australian boarders who started filming Street together during the covid lockdown. Since then, we have decided to push ourselves and extend our street snowboarding to international waters.
Our crew is pretty big and during Australian winter we roll pretty heavy. But this year for this video we had; Robbie Green, Chris Busetti, Riley Lalor, Ryan Cafferkey and Tas Forrest riding. Along with Reuben Riegler (myself) filming.
Going into this trip we definitely felt like we had a bit more of a plan. After last year (Sorry You Feel That Way) we knew what we had to do and how to make spots work, it wasn’t as much trial and error although we definitely still have a lot to learn.
The whole crew had a new mindset, new ideas and we were ready to get amongst it – but once we arrived in Minnesota we found there was no snow in the cities. Like none at all.
We found ourselves driving an hour and a half, (sometimes more) every day to go and pull together some spots with what was left of the last snowfall and that’s how we got our first 5 or so clips.
In turn everyone got to spend a lot of time riding Hyland Hills to warm up which definitely helped the boys hone in some of the tricks they knew they would want to try in the streets.
Once that snow was gone we drove through the night to Quebec while I battled the worst hangover of my life after blacking out at the Red Bull Heavy Metal in St Paul.
For this video, I had the idea to use an all Australian sound track and all the boys were onboard. It kind of felt right to pay homage to home, and get some more underrated Australian artists into the ears of our international viewers.
The main idea for the video was to one up ourselves in every aspect, riding, editing, filming and our overall process in the streets. We always want to achieve something better while still creating something everyone can enjoy and get some stoke from.
It’s hard being out in the cold every day, shovelling spots, riding, filming and just generally being so far from home. But once the video starts taking form and you hear everyone getting so hyped at the premier it’s all worth it.
Hopefully this video can help inspire people to push their snowboarding, ride with their crew and most importantly just enjoy the process. Because we are definitely enjoying this process.
I’d like to thank; Marcus Stocker, Pete Long, Dialrange, Modest Eyewear, DC, Libtech, Gnu, Jake Carthew, Laced Mag, the Calsurf crew and all the Minnesota homies.
