You’ve probably never heard of Tess Coady before but it’s a name you’re going to start seeing and hearing a lot more of in the snowboard scene. Tess is a 16 year old snowboarder who bases herself in Jindabyne, NSW for the Australian winters and destroys everything in sight with her board, boasting style, control and attitude far beyond her years.
Tess is a breath of fresh air from the child snowboarding prodigy’s, offering a fun and relaxed approach to competition and continually progressing on her snowboard.
Tess this week placed 6th in the Mammoth World Cup Snowboarding Slopestyle event, competing against the best female snowboarders in the world. Although the weather sucked in the finals, Tess overall dominated among the top field of riders across the event, securing a spot in the 8 person final on the previous day with a qualifying run of 72.66.
We caught up with Tess to have a quick chat…
Tess! Congratulations on the result…6th place…that’s amazing. Tell me about who you were up against? Was it a bit surreal competing alongside your idols?
Thanks! In the final I was competing against riders like Jaime Anderson, Hailey Langland, Julia Marino, Zoi Synott and Aimee Fuller. It was so crazy to think I was up against those girls in the final as I have always and still idolise most of them for what they have done for women’s snowboarding.
What are your plans for the rest of the season?
My Plans for the rest of the season are to hang out in Mammoth for another month or so and then I will head over to Spain and do the World Championships which I am super stoked I got a spot for! Then, I’ll head to Absolute Park in Switzerland for the Spring Battle and then over to Czech for a World Cup event and also for the Junior World Cup.
Wow, sounds like a busy schedule. Tell me, what was your recipe for success heading into this competition?
My recipe for success was really just to have fun and soak up the atmosphere. It was pretty surreal to be in a World Cup final with all the cameras everywhere and dropping in front of my favourite ridders. I think just being a part of that environment made for a really fun day!
