If you were to create an event for the people, the Burton Mystery Series is it.
A global series of snowboarding events, The Burton Mystery Series aims to bring the spirit of snowboarding to riders of all ages and abilities and has become a new leader in the inclusive event space. Launched in 2022 with over 20 events around the world, Mystery gathers snowboarders from all walks of life under a shared love of snowboarding, and stands out for its unique approach and focus on fun.
It’s also coming to Australia this August.
The Backstory
In 2020, The oldest snowboarding contest in the world, The Burton US Open, went off in Vail, Colorado as the entire pro snowboarding circuit gathered for what they call the snowboarder’s snowboarding event. It was a historic event, the first US Open since the passing of Jake Burton, and featured incredible tributes, including the famous pipe poach moment.
That year also happened to be the last US Open before COVID shut the whole world down and forced everyone to retreat from the mountains. During the years of the pandemic, Burton went into somewhat of a re-evaluation phase, and looked in detail into what the snowboarding event landscaped looked like, what it needed, and what people wanted.
The consensus was that people wanted to be more involved in the event space – and actually participate. The US Open didn’t become Mystery, but in essence the Mystery Series was created to offer an alternative to traditional snowboarding contests – one focused on inclusion.
Recognising that many riders are deterred by the competitive and often intimidating atmosphere of traditional events, Burton sought to create a series that emphasised fun, community, and inclusivity. The goal was to make snowboarding accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of skill level or experience.
According to Jake Burton’s son, George:
“The Burton Mystery Series combines the best elements of snowboarding to create community. These grassroots events are a celebration of the sport and lifestyle we all love. We’re focusing on snowboarding inclusivity and accessibility by partnering with resorts and city municipalities who are dedicated to sharing the love of snowboarding with everyone. Simultaneously, we’re creating the space for our pro athletes to inspire the next generation of riders with their talent. This format creates a shared sense of belonging between all levels of snowboarders: from the top athletes in the world to those who have never snowboarded before. We’re going to do what we do best – have fun together. Invite the whole family – you’ll fall more in love with our community and our sport!”
The Format and Features
Unlike conventional snowboarding competitions, the Mystery Series events are designed to be more low-pressure and welcoming. The format typically includes a banked slalom course that caters to different skill levels, combined with some sort of park set up and jam sessions where pros engage with punters.
A key feature of the Mystery Series is its surprise element. True to its name, the specific details of each event, including the course and demo feature, are often kept secret until the day of the event adding a level spontaneity and a focus on fun rather than fame and fortune!
For the Community
The Mystery Series is deeply rooted in the snowboarding community – an event for the people! Burton collaborates with local resorts and snowboarding communities around the world to host these events, ensuring they reflect the unique character and vibe of each location. With the primary objective of the event being access and inclusivity, the events are open to riders of all ages and abilities, and there are no registration fees. Just rock up, and rip in.
Getting Involved
For the first time, The Mystery Series is coming to town down here in Australia. The event happens August 31st at Falls Creek and is free to enter provided you have a lift pass – which for anyone who rides Perisher is accessible on the EPIC pass. There’ll be a banked slalom course suitable for all ages and abilities, prize money for the older shred heads, product giveaways, local athlete demos, BBQ, après and more. Sounds like a good time.
