Backcountry Essentials | The North Face Forecaster Pack

It’s currently dumping in Australia right now. Just when the season looked like it was on its last legs…Mother Nature has turned the tap back on and is delivering the goods.

The lifts stop spinning on the 5th of October and have already stopped over at Thredbo. However, the backcountry is primed and ready to rip. You can still ride the Kozzie Chair up at Thredbo to access the backcountry and the roads to Guthega are open and we imagine Charlotte Pass ain’t far off. Victoria unfortunately still in lockdown…

If you’ve ventured into the backcountry a couple times or are keen to start exploring. There’s two vital things you need to know. One, is to be safe and know what you’re doing. Two, is that your year 12 backpack that fits all your textbooks and skateboard will not cut it out there. Ever.

Having the right gear in the backcountry makes for the perfect day. Having subpar gear, just causes more and more frustration, it ain’t worth the risk. Trust us, we’re rookies that have slowly learnt over 10 years. The right gear, is the only option.

As mentioned above, the backpack is vital. Jackets, pants, socks, boots, board…they can come secondary. Backpacks are number one. And lucky for you we recently tested and trialed a number one technical pack from The North Face – The Forecaster 35.

The bag of all bags…

The Forecaster 35 is a 35 litre go to pack for anyone that’s keen to head out backcountry, plus those who get a little adventurous in-resort and hit sidecountry or smash out the first to last lift program. The tech is what makes it the goods – it’s made with IronLite™ material. Essentially, it’s a crazy lightweight but durable material – allowing for more time ripping and less time gripping due to to much weight on your back.

It’s got a heap of other features including a flip forward, detachable lid to fit your helmet. There’s also a pocket dedicated for every essential backcountry item – beacon, shovel, probe, ice tools, rope, water bottle or in our case a hip flask.

Pockets for days. Organisation in backcountry is key. More clarity, less stress.

The best thing is…right now it’s just under 50% off! $350.00 down to $179.00. The North Face currently have a huge winter sale with most items sitting at around 40% off. Get a bag, and treat yourself to something else. If there’s ever a time to start adventuring more in your backyard, it’s now.
