Snowboarding lost an icon yesterday. Marko ‘Grilo’ Grilc from Slovenia passed away yesterday in a tragic snowboarding accident whilst filming in Sölden, Austria. Reports have been confirmed that he was on location filming when the accident took place. Grilo hit a rock and suffered a fatal head injury, the accompanying crew tried to resuscitate him, but the first responding medical team could only determine death as they arrived at the scene.
Our thoughts and hearts go out to Grilo’s family and friends during this tragic time. Marko will be deeply missed by the entire snowboarding community and never, ever forgotten.
The iconic Slovenian snowboarder boasts an incredible 20 plus professional career as a snowboarder and did it all. International podiums – Air & Syle Winner and X Games Medalist, gracing the pages of every magazine, iconic video sections and one of the pioneers in the new-age snowboarding webisode and freestyle path.
Grilo’s breakthrough moment as a pro-snowboarder was when he was featured in David Benedek’s ’91 Words for Snow’ back in 2005 and went from being unknown to cementing is name in the snowboard industry for what would be an incredible career spanning over 20 years.
Team Transfer have had the pleasure of working on projects, riding park laps, pow days and sidecountry stahes with Grilo over the past 10 years. Grilo fell in love with Australia and New Zealand on an initial trip he embarked on to compete in the iconic ‘Style Wars’ event and has returned back for the Southern Hemisphere winter’s countless times since.
Not only did he help draw international attention to the Australian and New Zealand snowboarding scene through his successful webiosde series ‘Grilosodes’ but he was simply one of the greatest people to ever go snowboard with. A positive vibe, all day, everyday and an infectious love for snowboarding that made everyone that rode with him…feel good. An incredible ambassador for snowboarding and even more so, for life in general. A role model to future generations and an inspiration to current snowboarders.
Below are some of the amazing moments we’ve shared with Grilo over the recent years whilst in Australia. He LOVED Australia and it was incredible to share these special moments with him.
Team Transfer want to send our thoughts and condolences to Grilo’s fiancée Nina and their children, his family, and everyone he has connected with around the world.
Rest In Peace, Grilo.
